Maths Teacher Training.

The vision for our Maths teacher training programme is to enable our trainees to become competent, creative and ambitious teachers, capable of inspiring young people of all abilities to enjoy Maths and challenge themselves to reach our high expectations of them.

“I made the decision to join the SCITT programme after a friend of mine recommended it, having trained with the JT SCITT a number of years ago. I would definitely recommend the SCITT programme to anyone considering getting into teaching. If you think it’s going to be easy, it’s not! Be prepared for long hours and obsessing over the tiniest of things in your lesson plans, however it’s so worth it and what better way to spend the rest of your life than having a profound effect on young people!”

Subject Pedagogy Tutor.

Ever since his initial teacher training Liam has always known that he wanted to help both experienced teachers and ambitious ECT teachers in their quest to become even better at teaching Mathematics. This desire to support early year teachers has led to Liam mentoring trainees and has enjoyed assisting their growth as they develop their teaching skills.

Liam is undertaking the NPQ in leading teacher development and is part of the ‘Mastery for Mathematics’ team in Mastery Specialism. Alongside his experience of working in a large Secondary school as a KS4 Mathematics coordinator, these qualifications will be equipping Liam in his role as a John Taylor SCITT tutor, leading to our future teachers getting expert guidance.

Liam has a passion for helping teachers see ways of teaching Mathematics that enable pupils to succeed!’

Programme Specific Elements.

We welcome trainees onto the Maths programme from a wide range of backgrounds. Successful trainees have come from engineering, history lecturing and charity work, to recent graduates in Maths (or other related subjects). The course will enable you to develop your Mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogy, ready to inspire and educate our young learners in school.

Before commencing on our programme, trainees will have completed a Subject Knowledge Audit, identifying their weaker areas of knowledge within Maths. Sessions will often be tailored to address these weaknesses through a strand of teaching practices we wish to work on.

Sessions are always of a very practical nature, with trainees being involved in solving mathematical problems, discussions relating to the pedagogical element being studied, participating in relevant activities, and planning how to apply learning in practice after the sessions.

Typically sessions in Maths will include:
