Bursaries and scholarships are tax-free amounts of money that you receive to train in certain subjects. This money does not need to be paid back
The Department for Education (DfE) holds responsibility of the bursaries and scholarships associated with all ITT courses.
If you are eligible for a bursary to fund your teacher training year, you do not need to apply and will automatically receive the payments upon commencing your training programme.
Eligibility
In order to be eligible for a bursary for 2025/26 you must:
- be entitled to support under the student finance criteria
- have the right to work in the UK
- be training to teach an eligible subject (listed below)
- have achieved a BA(hons) 2:2 or higher, a PhD or Master's

Scholarships for 2025/26
Scholarships are also available for certain subjects but unlike bursaries, must be applied for separately to ITT.
Scholarships are offered by independent institutions and are awarded instead of a bursary only to applicants who have passed a robust application and interview process in their specialist subject area. Each institution sets their own eligibility criteria.
