Thinking about becoming a teacher? Our simple guide breaks down the teacher training application process, so you know what to expect at every stage.
Thinking about becoming a teacher but not quite sure where to start?
Applying for teacher training can feel like a big step, but the process itself is relatively straightforward. Whether you’re finishing university, changing career or have been considering teaching for a while, knowing what to expect can make getting started much easier.
Here’s a simple guide to applying for teacher training with The John Taylor SCITT.
Before applying, take some time to explore the courses and providers available to you.
Think about the age group or subject you’d like to teach, where you’d like to train and the type of training experience that would suit you.
At The John Taylor SCITT, our school-based teacher training gives you the opportunity to learn in real school environments while being supported by experienced teachers, mentors and our SCITT team.
Once you’ve found a course you’re interested in, check that you meet the relevant entry requirements.
Requirements can vary depending on the course and subject, so always check the latest information before submitting your application. If you’re unsure whether your qualifications meet the requirements, get in touch with us – we’re happy to help.
Teacher training applications are made through the Department for Education’s Apply for Teacher Training service.
As part of your application, you’ll provide information about your qualifications, experience and employment history, as well as explain why you want to become a teacher.
This is your opportunity to tell us about you. You don’t need to have years of classroom experience – focus on why teaching appeals to you, the skills and experiences you can bring to the profession and what has motivated you to apply.
Once you’re happy with your application, it’s time to submit it.
Don’t feel that you need to wait until everything feels absolutely perfect. If you know teaching is something you want to explore, getting your application underway is an important first step.
If your application is successful, you may be invited to interview.
The interview gives us the chance to get to know you better, understand why you want to teach and explore your potential as a future teacher. It’s also your opportunity to learn more about The John Taylor SCITT and ask us questions.
Try not to think of it as something designed to catch you out. We want to see your enthusiasm, your potential and your willingness to learn.
If you’re offered a place, congratulations! We’ll guide you through what happens next and the steps you need to complete before beginning your teacher training.
Then, the exciting part begins: preparing to take your first steps into the classroom and towards a new career in teaching.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.
